Mental Health Care Meets the Healing Power of Connection
Through a collaborative partnership between District Counseling and The Anchored Pasture, clients have the opportunity to experience a different approach to mental health care through equine-assisted therapy and wellness.
District Counseling provides professional mental health services with experienced therapists who support individuals through concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional regulation, relationships, and life transitions.
The Anchored Pasture provides a peaceful, nature-based environment where clients can participate in structured, ground-based experiences with horses.
Together, these services create an opportunity to combine professional counseling with experiential equine work, allowing clients to explore their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, and nervous-system responses in a unique setting.

What is Equine Facilitated Wellness?
Equine Facilitated Wellness integrates somatic, emotional, and psychological approaches within a strengths-based wellness model.
Grounded in trauma-informed practices, mindfulness, embodiment, and relational awareness, EFW uses guided, ground-based interactions with horses to create opportunities for insight, emotional regulation, personal growth, and healing.
Horses are highly perceptive herd animals. They naturally respond to body language, energy, movement, and emotional cues. This can create a unique opportunity to become more aware of what is happening within you—often without needing to put everything into words.
During sessions, you and your therapist work alongside the horses through intentional activities designed to support your individual goals.
How Equine Facilitated Wellness Can Help
EFW can support individuals who are working through a variety of emotional and relational challenges, including:
Anxiety, Stress & Depression
Learn practical ways to recognize emotional responses, regulate your nervous system, and become more grounded in the present moment.
Trauma & PTSD
Develop greater emotional safety, body awareness, trust, and a sense of agency through a trauma-informed, experiential approach.
Emotional Regulation
Practice identifying emotions and responding to them in healthier, more intentional ways.
Relationships & Boundaries
Explore communication, trust, connection, boundaries, and relational patterns through real-time interactions with horses.
Children & Teens
Provide young people with an engaging environment to develop emotional awareness, confidence, communication, and social-emotional skills.
Neurodivergent Individuals
EFW may provide opportunities to support emotional regulation, sensory awareness, focus, communication, and social-emotional development for individuals with ADHD, Autism, and other neurodivergent experiences.
What Happens During an Equine Facilitated Wellness Session
You don't need to have experience with horses to participate.
Sessions take place through ground-based activities, meaning you do not need to ride the horse.
Depending on your goals, a session may involve:
- Spending time observing and connecting with the horses
- Mindfulness and grounding exercises
- Guided activities with a horse
- Exploring boundaries and communication
- Developing emotional awareness
- Practicing nervous-system regulation
- Exploring relational patterns
- Processing experiences through conversation and reflection
Your therapist will guide the experience based on your needs and treatment goals.
There is no expectation that you "perform" or know exactly what to do. The process is about slowing down, becoming present, and discovering what the experience can teach you.
Why Horses?
Horses offer something different from a traditional therapy environment.
Because they respond naturally to body language and changes in their environment, interactions with horses can provide immediate, nonjudgmental feedback.
This can help you notice things that may be difficult to recognize through conversation alone.
- Instead of simply talking about boundaries, you may have an opportunity to practice boundaries.
- Instead of only discussing emotional regulation, you can practice regulation in real time.
- Instead of talking about connection, you can experience connection.
The goal isn't simply to interact with a horse. It's to use that interaction as an opportunity for greater self-awareness, emotional growth, and meaningful change.

Equine Facilitated Wellness Vs. Traditional Talk Therapy
Traditional talk therapy can be incredibly valuable, but healing doesn't always happen through words alone.
Equine Facilitated Wellness incorporates an experiential, somatic, and relational component, allowing you to engage your body, emotions, and mind.
This approach can help you step out of your head and into the present moment while exploring patterns, emotions, relationships, and behaviors in a new environment.
For some individuals, experiencing something firsthand can create insights that are difficult to access through conversation alone.

It may be particularly helpful for individuals experiencing:
