My name is Jhoánie (Jo-Annie) Romero, and I am an LPC-A under the supervision of Jackeline Hurtado, MEd, LPC-S. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus in Psychology and a minor in Health Education from the University of Houston-Main Campus. I obtained a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Palo Alto University. I proudly graduated with honors from both institutions.
I believe each individual holds unique characteristics influenced by our environment, previous life events, and background. Thus, we all experience life differently. I have experience working with different populations including individuals experiencing mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder(s); anxiety; trauma; life adjustments; and neurological disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
I worked as a Registered Behavioral Technician in an out-patient clinic for 3 years. As an RBT, I performed Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy in a one-on-one setting with adolescents and adults diagnosed with ASD. My interest in the mental health field grew from my time there.
I enjoy helping children, adolescents, and adults navigate through different obstacles that are preventing them from being their authentic selves and living a fulfilling life. I do this by teaching my clients mindfulness, coping & problem-solving skills, and by helping them identify faulty thinking-patterns. I implement Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) through a Person-Centered framework. My overall aim is to create a safe, welcoming environment for everyone.
During my free time I spend time with my loved ones and my 3 furry companions. I enjoy binging TV shows, watching Japanese animation, exploring different foods around the area, and occasionally playing video games. I absolutely love traveling and hiking.
I also run a metal health page on Instagram by the username @prescribingpsychotherapy – I post helpful tips, tricks, and more.
